Ending STEM Employment and Ending STEM OPT Benefit
STEM OPT students must report to ISS when ending employment with a STEM employer and ending the STEM OPT benefit before the end date of the STEM OPT EAD. This includes the following scenarios:
- Change of status and no longer F-1
- Departing the U.S. and not returning during the STEM OPT period
Due Date: Within 10 days of the employment end date.
No updated I-20 will be issued after reporting
Instructions to report end of employment
- Log in to your International Students & Scholars (ISS) Portal using the link below.
- Navigate to (2) Personal & Program and confirm that your U.S. physical address is current.
- If your address is not up to date, update your SEVIS Domestic Address in your CSUF Portal.
- Navigate to (3) Requests & Documents and open the Practical Training (OPT or STEM-OPT) Employer Update.
- Select the STEM OPT Employment Period
- Click the Employer that you are modifying
- Update the Requested End Date with the final date of employment with the listed employer
- Answer the question, How is your employment related to your course work?
- Upload page 5 of the I-983 (

- Submit the form
Instructions to request end of STEM OPT benefit
- Log in to your International Students & Scholars (ISS) Portal using the link below.
- Navigate to (2) Personal & Program and confirm that your U.S. physical address is current.
- If your address is not up to date, update your SEVIS Domestic Address in your CSUF Portal.
- Navigate to (3) Requests & Documents and open the Change to F-1 Status or Reporting Early Exit from U.S.
- Select either:
- I have changed my status and am no longer F-1
- I am currently on approved STEM OPT, but want to end my employment benefit and leave the U.S.
- If selecting I have changed my status and am no longer F-1, upload the Permanent Residency card, I-797 Notice of Action or I-94 which indicates the new status
- If selecting I am currently on approved STEM OPT, but want to end my employment benefit and leave the U.S., upload the flight ticket or flight itinerary that includes, at minimum, your name and departure date
- Submit the form
