New Travel Restrictions – Effective January 1, 2026


On June 4, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation (Presidential Proclamation 10949) titled "Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats." The order introduces new travel restrictions that take effect on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. (EDT). 

On December 16, 2025, President Trump issued a new proclamation titled "Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Visitors to Protect the Security of the United States." The order modified the list of countries identified in Presidential Proclamation 10949, and becomes effective on Thursday, January 1, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. (EDT).

Affected Countries

 

Full Entry Ban (20 countries):
Individuals from the following countries are subject to a full entry ban under both immigrant and nonimmigrant visa categories: Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Mali, Niger, Palestinian Authority Travel Documents, Siera Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria,and Yemen.

Partial Restrictions (20 countries):
Individuals from these countries face restrictions on specific visa types, including B-1/B-2 (tourist/business), F (student), M (vocational student), and J (exchange visitor) visas: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

 

What This Means for Students

 

If you’re currently inside the U.S.:

    • Do not travel internationally if you're from one of the affected countries.
    • Stay in the U.S. to avoid potential issues with re-entry once the restrictions go into effect.

Travel

To get a travel signature, students must complete the Travel I-20 Request. If request is approved, an updated SEVIS document (Form I-20 or Form DS-2019) will be issued with a travel signature

Visas
