When and how should I start planning to study abroad?

We recommend you start planning at least a year in advance. You can start by signing up for an info session.

Where can I study overseas?

You can choose from study abroad options in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, Canada, Mexico and Australia. You can search for programs here.

When should I study abroad?

We recommend junior or senior year, although second-semester freshman and sophomores may participate. Graduate students—and those in their final year/semester—can study abroad as well.

How much does it cost to study abroad?

Cost varies by program and length of stay. You can use financial aid and most scholarships to study abroad during the semester, year or summer. The amount of aid you can use will depend on the program you choose. Please view our Costs page for more details.

Will the classes I take abroad count toward my degree?

Before you leave, you’ll meet with your academic administrators to ensure courses and credits will transfer back to Cal State Fullerton. Grades earned abroad are posted to your transcript and calculated in your GPA.

How can I study abroad without adding an additional semester to my degree?

The key to staying on schedule with your degree is to remain in close contact with our office and your academic advisors. If you do that, studying abroad should not delay your degree.

Can I study abroad in a country where I don't speak the language?

Some programs require knowledge of a foreign language, but many provide courses in English while you also study the local language. If you’re studying a foreign language, we can help you find a program that offers a language-immersion course to help you improve your language abilities and understanding of the local culture.

Where will I live?

Each study abroad program offers students living accommodations that include dormitory housing, apartments, home stay or bed and breakfasts.

I've been accepted to my program - how do I prepare?

After you have been accepted to your program, you will have access to the "SAGE Pre-Departure Checklist," which provides extensive details about all of the tasks and activities you will complete prior to departing for your program!  Your SAGE Advisor is available to help you during this pre-departure time.

How can I speak with a student who has studied abroad?

Call or stop by the Study Abroad office, and one of our Study Abroad Advisors will be happy to set you up with a former study abroad student who can answer any questions you might have about their experiences abroad.

Financial Aid

Can I use financial aid to study abroad?

It is possible to use some form of financial aid for virtually every study abroad option.

Are there any special procedures for using financial aid to study abroad?

To use your financial aid for studying abroad, you must work with our office to complete all necessary forms. This may include the financial aid consortium agreement with another university. Cal State Fullerton financial aid will not be applied to study abroad expenses unless these procedures are completed prior to departure.

How much of my costs will financial aid cover?

It depends on your study abroad program cost, your financial need and the number of supplementary loans. In reviewing your options, you should also consider how much loan debt you’re willing to incur.

Who takes care of my financial aid while I'm overseas?

You do, but we’re here to help before you go. The Study Abroad office can help you make arrangements to ensure all funds are sent to the right places. You must make these arrangements before you leave, otherwise your aid may be delayed or may not be released at all.
